Cheesy Dog Treats
½ cup grated cheddar cheese
3 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp unsweetened applesauce (sweetened applesauce will work too, if that’s what you have)
½ cup pureed carrots
1 cup brown rice flour
1-2 tsps milk
¼ cup chopped mint, optional (if you want your pup to have minty fresh breath!)
Place carrots in food processor or blender & puree. Add milk ½ tsp at a time to bring the carrots together in a puree.
In a mixing bowl, stir together the carrot puree with the other ingredients. If dough is a little dry, add milk, a splash at a time until dough comes together. If dough is too wet, add a little more flour, sprinkling in a little at a time until dough comes together.
Wrap in plastic & refrigerate for an hour.
Cover baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly spray with GF baking spray.
Roll dough into bite-sized balls (the size will depend on how big your dog is!) & place on prepared baking sheet.
Bake at 375° for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
Store in air tight container. I keep mine in the refrigerator so they keep longer.
Notes:
From what I understand, it’s pretty rare for a dog to have a gluten allergy. But if their human has a gluten allergy, they may not want to handle dog treats containing gluten. Even though just touching them usually doesn’t cause a reaction, but if they don’t wash their hands right away, the gluten may be on their fingers & they then risk ingesting it.
